ICC Champions Trophy-Ind VS Bangaldesh: Kohli credited Dhoni for bringing Jadhav

India defeated Bangladesh by nine wickets in the second semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 at Edgbaston on Thursday to set up title clash against Pakistan. The defending champions chased down the 265-run target in 40.1 overs as the Bangladesh bowlers were sent on a leather hunt by the all-star Indian batting line-up.

Though Bangladesh were going great guns at one stage with 154/2 after 28 overs, they lost the plot in the middle overs. Indian skipper Virat Kohli took a gamble to bring in Kedar Jadhav to bowl which worked well. Jadhav gave India the breakthrough in his second over itself which helped the defending champions peg Bangladesh back.
Kohli, during the post-match press-conference, credited former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the decision to bring in the off-spinner at the crucial juncture. Kohli said that the game-changing decision was jointly taken by him and Dhoni. Jadhav dismissed set batsmen Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim after their 121-run stand to get India back on track in the match.
"Yeah, when moves like this pay off, I won't take the whole credit. Obviously, I asked MS, as well, and we both decided that Kedar is a good option at the moment, and he bowled really well. Credit to him.
"Kedar Jadhav doesn't bowl much in the nets, but he is a smart cricketer. He knows where the batsmen get troubled, and if you can think like a batter when you are bowling, it's obviously a bit of an advantage to any bowler. So I think that today he executed plans perfectly."

Kohli was effusive in his praise for his new ball bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
"Well, they were outstanding. Especially, the last two games they have been terrific initially and in the later stages, as well, their wicket-taking ability is something that the opposition is aware of.
"So they are always careful going hard against these two guys, and yeah, their length after the Sri Lanka game has been impeccable. It's been consistent, line close to the batsmen, always there with an opportunity to get a wicket, as I mentioned.
Kohli said "Even in conditions which are not offering too much, bowling such lines that we can produce wicket-taking opportunities,"

Jadhav Case: ICJ has rejected India's appeal for six months to file a plea

Jadhav, a former Indian Navy officer, was arrested from Balochistan in March last year. On April 10, a Pakistani military court sentenced Jadhav to death for his "involvement in espionage and terrorist activities in Pakistan". Pakistan said he was an agent for India's intelligence agency the Research and Analysis wing. From the time of Jadhav's arrest, to his sentencing, and until today, Pakistan has refused over a dozen requests from India to give him consular access. That was one of the main arguments in India's appeal to the ICJ for a stay on the execution of Jadhav.

NEW DELHI: Islamabad claimed on Thursday that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) rejected India's request for six months to file a plea in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case, ordering it to do so by September 13, reported Pakistani media.

Islamabad also said the international court told Pakistan it will have time until December 13 to file a reply, once India files its plea in September, reported Dunya News. And unnamed sources told Dawn the ICJ will begin hearing the case January 2018.

There has been no word from New Delhi about this development as of Friday morning.

Pakistan's attorney general Ashtar Ausaf Ali reportedly said the Hague-based ICJ's registrar informed Islamabad about this development through its consulate in the Netherlands.

Delegations from Pakistan and India met with the ICJ president June 8 to discuss the timeline of the case of the Indian national who was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court for "espionage", reported IANS earlier.

After India's request for more time, which it reportedly made at the June 8 meeting, Pakistan opposed it.

"India had adopted the stance that the matter was one of life and death, but Pakistan had stated that the ICJ is not a court of appeals," said Ali, according to Dawn.

He said Pakistan told the international tribunal India doesn't need as long as six months

"The ICJ is supposed to conclude whether or not Jadhav can receive consular access, for which a time period of two to three months is more than enough to file a response."

On May 18, the ICJ ordered Pakistan to halt the execution of Jadhav on a plea filed by India. The court stayed the execution pending a final decision on India's case.

Petrol and diesel rates are set to change daily starting Friday, June 16

Petrol and diesel rates are set to change daily starting Friday, June 16. On Wednesday, petrol pump owners decided to call off their proposed strike against the daily revision of fuel prices after the government agreed to change the timing for updating the daily rates.

Following is a cheatsheet to all you need to know about the changes that come into effect from Friday:

1. Petrol and diesel prices would be revised every day at 6 am across the country, moving away from the practice of revising rates at midnight every fortnight. Petrol pump owners had sought a change in the timing as otherwise they would have had to deploy additional manpower every night to change the rates.

2. The decision to revise fuel rates daily from June 16 is an extension of a pilot that the oil companies have been running in the five cities of Udaipur, Jamshedpur, Puducherry, Chandigarh, and Vishakhapatnam, since May
1. Calling the pilot a success, Oil Minister Dharamendra Pradhan said that even the slightest change in international oil prices will be passed on to consumers.

3. While, the daily prices will be prominently displayed at the petrol pumps, customers can also find out the dynamic rates via sms (short messaging service) and IOCL's (Indian Oil Corporation Limited) mobile app Fuel@IOC.

4. There is a 'Locate Us' tab in IOCL's app, which leads to a map that shows petrol pumps in the vicinity of the user. Customers can click on the pumps that are marked on the map to find out the rates.

5. Alternatively, customers can check the prices applicable in their cities by sending SMS RSP< SPACE >DEALER CODE to 92249-92249. The Dealer Code of each petrol pump would be prominently displayed in the petrol pump premises.

6. Prices within a particular city may differ up to 15 paise/ litre from pump to pump of the three major oil marketing companies -- Indian Oil Corporation Limited(IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) that control over 95 per cent fuel stations in the country. The minor variation in prices will depend on how far a given petrol pump is from its supply terminal and the varying transportation cost.

7. Petrol and diesel rates in different states will continue to have the current disparity in prices owing to the fact that petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, crude oil, jet fuel and natural gas have been temporarily excluded from the GST (goods and services tax) regime in a bid to prevent any disruption in states' revenue in the initial years. However, the Oil Minister has said that eventually they too would be brought under GST which aims to subsume the various central and state levies that are levied on goods and services, bringing India under a single tax regime.

8. IOCL, which is India's largest oil retailer has said that it is carrying out extensive training of dealers (petrol pumps) to ensure that customers do not face any pricing misinformation or glitches. "All the 26,000 plus Indian Oil dealers will be given timely information on the effective prices at a pre-designated time - say 20:00 hrs for the next day. This can be set to automatically come into effect at midnight at the automated ROs (Retail Outlets), without manual intervention," it said.

9. At the non-automated petrol pumps, dealers would get the updated price via customised SMSs, e-mails, mobile app & web portal for dealers.

10. Petrol and diesel prices have been deregulated in India for years now - which means they are linked to market rates. Oil marketing companies so far revised petrol and diesel rates every fortnight based on global oil prices and foreign exchange rate.

fire at London Apartment

A fire ripped through a 24-storey block of flats in west London early on Wednesday, killing several people and trapping dozens of residents, some of whom were seen throwing children from windows in the hope they survive the blaze.

Eyewitnesses said they had also seen some people fall or jump from the Grenfell Tower, a 1970s building in the working-class north Kensington area, after it caught fire at around 1am UK time (0530 India time). There were fears that the building might crumble due to the blaze, police said.
Fire fighters struggled for hours to cope with what was called a “major” incident and an “unprecedented situation”.

London Fire Brigade commissioner Dany Cotton said, “Over 200 firefighters and officers are attending this incident, with 40 fire engines and a range of other specialist vehicles, including 14 fire rescue units in attendance.”
“London ambulance service have confirmed that a number of people have been taken to five hospitals. At this time I am sad to confirm that we now know that there have been fatalities. I cannot confirm the number at this time,” she added.
Cotton said the structural engineer was monitoring the stability of the building, which appears safe for now. Cotton added that they were still looking for any remaining people inside the tower block.
The cause of the fire was not known, but as witnesses and survivors narrated harrowing accounts, residents in the area said apprehensions about the building’s fire safety were expressed in the recent past, but little notice had been taken by authorities.
A witness, Samira Lamrani, told Britain’s Press Association she saw a woman try to save the baby by dropping it from a window “on the ninth or 10th floor.”
She said, “people were starting to appear at the windows, frantically banging and screaming. The windows were slightly ajar, a woman was gesturing that she was about to throw her baby and if somebody could catch her baby.
“Somebody did, a gentleman ran forward and managed to grab the baby,” she added.

London ambulance service said 50 people had been taken to five hospitals after the high-rise fire.
London mayor Sadiq Khan said questions needed to be answered about the fire advice given to residents: “One of the concerns that we have is it’s a 24-storey building but for obvious reasons, with the scale of the fire, our experts weren’t able to reach all the way to the top, so of course these are questions that need to be answered as soon as possible.
“A lot of people” are still unaccounted for and “fire crews only managed to reach the 12th floor at the height of the fire,” he said.

“It’s very distressing, not just for those of us watching as lay people, but also very distressing for the emergency services. We declared a major incident very early, which meant not just the fire service but also the London Ambulance Service, the police and the others were involved at the scene,” Khan told BBC Radio 4.
Some residents were seen using bedsheets to make their escape from the tower block. Witnesses could hear screaming from the upper floors as the flames rose and one desperate resident could be seen waving a white cloth.
Eyewitnesses said they had seen others fall or jump from the stricken building.
“It has burned through to its very core. It looks very bad, very very bad. I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s just such a big fire. The whole building is just crumbling. It’s just billowing black smoke,” an eyewitness told the BBC.

Police turned a church near the scene into a makeshift centre for evacuees.
Many people at St Clement’s church are in wheelchairs and have been brought from adjacent buildings that were evacuated by firefighters because of fears the fire might spread.
London’s Metropolitan police service tweeted, “Residents continue to be evacuated from the tower block fire in North Kensington. A number of people being treated for a range of injuries.”
The police said an emergency number had been set up and anyone concerned for loved ones can call the casualty bureau at 08000961233.

Nassima Boutrig, who lives opposite the building, said she was awakened by sirens and smoke so thick that it filled her home as well.
“We saw the people screaming,” she said. “A lot of people said ‘Help, help, help.’ The fire brigade could only help downstairs. It was fire up, up, up. They couldn’t stop the fire.”
Assistant commissioner (fire) Dan Daly on the London Fire Brigade’s Facebook page said it was a large and very serious fire.
A photograph posted by the fire service showed the side of the building engulfed in flames.
Police said in a statement they were called at 1:16am (0016 GMT) “to reports of a large fire at a block of flats in the Lancaster West Estate”.

Tim Downie, who lives not far away, told Britain’s Press Association that he feared the building could collapse. He said he heard sirens, helicopters and shouting and then saw the building engulfed in flames.
“It’s the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen. I just hope they have got everyone out,” he said. “People have been bringing water, clothes, anything they’ve got to help, out to the cordon.

Police closed the A40, a major road leading out of west London, while some parts London’s underground train network were closed as a precaution. “Please avoid the area to allow emergency services access to the scene,” it tweeted.
The apartment block was built in 1974.

RBI to introduce new 500 Rs Notes.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday said it is launching a new batch of Rs 500 notes. "In continuation of issuing of Rs 500 denomination banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (new) series from time to time which are currently legal tender, a new batch of banknotes with inset letter "A" in both the number panels, bearing the signature of Dr. Urjit R. Patel Governor, Reserve Bank of India; with the year of printing '2017' on the reverse, are being issued," RBI said in a statement.

The design of these notes is similar in all respects to the Rs 500 banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series which were first notified on November 8, last year after Prime MInister Narendra Modi outlawed old high value notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000, in a bid to crackdown on black money.

The new series earlier released and currently in circulation has the inset letter "E". They will continue to be valid.

Last week, RBI had said that nearly 83 per cent of the currency has been remonetised and denied there was any shortage of cash in the system.

Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal in reply to a question in the lower house of the Parliament, Lok Sabha in December last year had said that the day on which demonetisation was announced (November 8), there were 17,165 million pieces of Rs 500 notes and 6,858 million pieces of Rs 1,000 notes in circulation. The data on the amount of demonetised notes returned, however, is still not available.
